Plato was an innovator of the forms of dialogue and dialectics in philosophy. He is also considered the founder of Western political philosophy. His most decisive philosophical influence is usually thought to have been with Socrates, and the pre-Socratic Pythagoras, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, but very little of the writings of his predecessors remain, and much of what we know about these figures today comes from Plato himself.
