Ballas Frederick SkinnerBurrhus Frederic Skinner (March 20, 1904 – August 18, 1990) was an American psychologist, behaviorist, author, inventor, and social philosopher. He served as a professor of psychology at Harvard University from 1958 until his retirement in 1974.

Skinner, who believed that free will was an illusion, thought that human behavior depends on the consequences of previous actions. If the outcome of an action is bad, it is less likely that the action will be repeated, and if the outcome is good, it is more likely that the action will be repeated.

In contemporary academia, Skinner is considered, along with John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov, a pioneer of modern behaviorism. Therefore, in a June 2002 survey, Skinner was named one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century.
