• Details of symptoms
The symptoms include glare and a white haze in the field of vision of my right eye. The difference in vision between my left and right eyes is causing discomfort.
Also, the bright white lights in supermarkets and convenience stores are particularly dazzling and painful for me.
The way we perceive colors also differs. An orange light appears orange to the left eye and yellow to the right eye.
Regarding how to handle things during the medical examination
The time before last, when I saw Dr. Kaji, I mentioned symptoms such as glare at the reception, but he tried to end the examination without mentioning them. Please make sure to check my symptoms before examining me in the future. He acted as if everything was going well after the surgery because my vision had improved, but please provide aftercare that includes not only vision but also how I see things. I am very worried that I may have to live with glare for the rest of my life, so I would like you to consider my position.
The following is a detailed account of my exchange with Professor Kaji.
When I asked about the glare and white haze, I was told that the cause might be a malfunction in pupil contraction or reflection from the lens.
Honda: "What can I do to get rid of the glare?"
Dr. Kaji: "There are also eye drops that reduce glare."
Honda: "Do I have to keep doing that for the rest of my life?"
Professor Kaji: "That seems to be the case."
I was extremely shocked when they said that to me as if it were someone else's problem.
Considering the cost of eye drops for a lifetime, transportation to the hospital, etc., the total comes to over 1 million yen. I underwent ICL surgery thinking it would eliminate the hassle and expense of wearing contact lenses, but this defeats the purpose.
We are not satisfied with this result after spending a large sum of money, approximately 500,000 yen. We will not be satisfied unless the hospital covers the future treatment costs.
- About the cause of glare
Afterward, I was examined by Dr. Igarashi at the Sanno Hospital Eye Center, who diagnosed that my iris was thinning, causing my sensitivity to light.
I was very surprised to learn that my iris is thinning, as neither Dr. Matsumoto nor Dr. Kaji had informed me of this. If you know anything about it, please explain it clearly. Otherwise, I might suspect that you are deliberately hiding something, which I believe is not good for either of us.
Ultimately, which of the following is the cause of the glare? Or is it something else entirely?
- Pupil contraction problems
- Because the iris has become thinner.
- Because there is inflammation in the iris, etc.
- Due to lens reflection
- Due to overcorrection
I would like the cause to be properly identified before treatment begins.
For example, I thought that a problem with pupil constriction would be detectable through tests or other examinations, but is that correct?
Dr. Matsumoto also mentioned that people become sensitive to light after cataract surgery. Is the mechanism behind my current sensitivity to light the same? If so, could you please explain that mechanism in more detail?
・About treatment
If the cause is thinning of the iris, I've heard that using glaucoma eye drops like Lumigan to darken the iris can also be effective in reducing glare. If that will cure it, I would like to do that.
Furthermore, I summarized my symptoms and their progression on my personal blog and solicited information from ophthalmologists about treatment options and hospitals/doctors who are knowledgeable about them. As a result, I was recommended Dr. Kamiya at Kitasato University Hospital and Dr. Oshika at Tsukuba University Hospital.
If treatment at Matsumoto Eye Clinic proves difficult, I would appreciate it if you could write a referral letter to one of the hospitals mentioned above, or to another hospital that Dr. Matsumoto deems appropriate.
