Nikola Tesla (July 10, 1856 – January 7, 1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist.
Born and raised in the Austrian Empire, Tesla studied engineering and physics in the 1870s without obtaining a degree, and gained practical experience in telephone communications and the new power industry at Continental Edison in the early 1880s. In 1884, he emigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. After a brief stint at Edison Machine Works in New York City, he became independent. With the help of partners to fund and market his ideas, Nikola Tesla established a laboratory and company in New York and developed a variety of electrical and mechanical devices. His AC induction motor and related multiphase AC patents, licensed from Westinghouse Electric Company in 1888, brought him considerable wealth and formed the basis of the multiphase systems that the company eventually sold.
