Jesus, also known as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ, was a 1st-century Jewish missionary and religious leader. He is said to be the Son of God and the long-awaited Messiah (Christ) prophesied in the Old Testament.
Jesus, who preached orally and was often called a "rabbi," debated with fellow Jews about the best way to obey God, practiced healing, taught through parables, gathered believers, was arrested and tried by Jewish authorities, handed over to the Roman government, and crucified on the orders of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. After his death, it is said that Jesus rose from the dead, and the community formed by his believers eventually became the early church.
