Of the eight psychological functions,Extroverted Sensing (Se)Introverted Intuition (Ni)These two functions work together as a pair. However, because they are opposing functions, it is difficult to use both simultaneously.

for example,Extroverted Sensing (Se)If that is your strongest skill (=primary function),Introverted Intuition (Ni)This tends to be the function you are least good at (= fourth function).

What is Extroverted Sensing (Se)?

Quoted from "Let's Look at the World from the Perspective of MBTI Personality Type Theory" (website no longer exists) (with some modifications)

We perceive our own bodies, others, and the external world in detail and as they are. Through our five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch—we receive information from the outside world. This is an instinctive and realistic psychological function. We are sensitive to everything that can be perceived by our five senses, such as the various colors, textures, sounds, and beautiful shapes of things around us. We desire and want to enjoy freedom. We seek physical thrills, new stimuli, and material comfort.

What is Introverted Intuition (Ni)?

The following is a quote (with some modifications) from "Let's Look at the World from the Perspective of MBTI Personality Type Theory" (website no longer exists).

It captures the commonalities and relationships between multiple events, phenomena, and concepts, and consolidates them into a single symbolic image.

The image itself is simple, but the interpretations and possibilities derived from it are diverse. However, introverted intuition places more emphasis on the convergence of the image than on that diversity.

This allows us to grasp the fundamental elements and reach a profound understanding, even when faced with a world that appears complex at first glance.

Frameworks and models for specific things are repeatedly refined.

This process happens unconsciously, and inspiration strikes suddenly. It's not the kind of thing that can be guided by conscious effort.

This flash of insight gives the person experiencing it an inexplicable sense of anticipation or premonition, and those who believe in it can gain confidence in what they should do and what their next course of action should be. It provides a long-term vision.

Extroverted Sensing (Se) and Introverted Intuition (Ni)

The following is a quote (with some modifications) from "Let's Look at the World from the Perspective of MBTI Personality Type Theory" (website no longer exists).

Extroverted sensing and introverted intuition work together, supporting each other. Their collaborative efforts lead to a unified perception.

By always focusing your awareness on the present moment, you can achieve appropriate movements and actions. Extroverted sensing allows you to have a good grasp of your surroundings and act without missing opportunities. In this way, you can accomplish many things without even realizing it. However, sometimes you become so engrossed in the moment that you fail to consider the overall impact of your actions. This can lead to hedonism or recklessness. While you can solve problems by changing and overcoming the current situation, this requires a firm understanding of the far-reaching effects of your actions and a clear vision.

Both extroverted sensing and introverted intuition are accompanied by strong visions. Sensitively perceiving what is happening moment by moment is stored in the mind and integrated unconsciously. Suddenly, connections between things that were previously unnoticed, and universal perceptions at work, emerge. These flashes of insight are accompanied by a confident vision that guides the next course of action. Such visions may seem like universal perceptions arising independently in consciousness. However, they are actually considered an unconscious integration of information obtained through the five senses. This is usually accompanied by certainty, and surrendering consciousness to these flashes of insight may feel comforting. However, the stronger the conviction in the vision, the more likely it is to be perceived as something that should be used to interact with the outside world, avoiding danger or bringing benefits. In doing so, it is necessary to constantly compare it with reality to verify its effectiveness.

When extroverted sensing and introverted intuition work together, we can immerse ourselves in the present moment with purpose based on universal understanding, and gain even deeper insights. Therefore, we can come to the realization that manual labor and physical work should never be underestimated in human development.

cognitive axis

Extroverted Sensing (Se)Introverted Intuition (Ni) These are opposing psychological functions that complement each other. Furthermore, the characteristics of each function differ depending on which function is dominant.

In the following, the psychological functions mentioned earlier will be referred to and explained as the primary function (dominant function).

*In the following explanation, the first function (dominant function) and the fourth function (inferior function) are described as a pair, but the second function (auxiliary function) and the third function (alternative function) are also complementary pairs.

Se-Ni's characteristics and catchphrases

Extroverted Sensing (Se)A type in which this is well-developed (ESTP(Adventurer type)ESTJ(Responsible type)) has a cognitive axis of Se-Ni.

  • Joy and pleasure(Se) That can be put off for later.(Ni)It's a desire that can't be fulfilled.
  • "That's just how things are."(Se)"That's the reality."(Se)"I want to do that."(Se)"I feel that way."(Se)
  • "I have the desire to do it"(Se)Put it off for later(Ni)"Cannot do that" (in the future)(Ni)(Not) what I want now(Se)"This is how it is now."(Se),future(Ni)Nobody knows."

Ni-Se's characteristics and catchphrases

Introverted Intuition (Ni)A type in which this is well-developed (INTJ(Strategist type)INFJ(Empathic type)) has a cognitive axis of Ni-Se.

  • Joy and comfort(Se)To desire and intuitively perceive a future in which one has(Ni)
  • "What will happen?"(Ni)"This is what happens."(Ni)"If that's the case, then in the future..."(Ni)"It looks like it's going to be like this."(Ni)"If you do this, this will happen."(Ni)
  • "May the future turn out just as we imagine it"(Ni), this is what I'm doing now(Se)"I foresee that this will happen in the future."(Ni)Therefore, it will be more fun.(Se)

The synthesis of extroverted sensing (Se) and introverted intuition (Ni)

Mastering both extroverted sensing (Se) and introverted intuition (Ni) requires considerable effort. Generally, people tend to favor one over the other.

So, how can we synthesize introverted sensing (Si) and extroverted intuition (Ne)?

I've explained the method in the following article, so please take a look.
