Description of the personality traits of the ISTP (Practitioner type)

We observe reality objectively, and through comparison and analysis, we make wise choices.

I am proud of my ability to think independently, maintain an unshakeable mind, and keep a calm and rational spirit.

Rather than talking about it in words, I prioritize what's actually happening.

Things should always be simple. I believe that complex matters should be made as precise and concise as possible, eliminating as much redundancy as possible.

They usually remain still and silent, conserving their energy until their next activity. The quieter they are, the more confident they become and the more energy they feel.

However, you'll probably get bored of always being in a safe state.

I will take a gamble and act. I will focus my attention on the present moment, patiently waiting for the right opportunity, and when that time comes, I will act without hesitation, without wavering, and not miss the timing.

I think it's foolish to expect good things to happen just by sitting around. That's why there seem to be so many people who excel in sports, business, and financial transactions.

When they decide they want to be competent, they focus intensely on it. ISTPs are interested in physical activity and practical matters. They are not interested in things that are too complex, abstract, or feel far removed from their immediate surroundings.

I am interested in practical machinery and equipment, as well as manufacturing and repair. I learn the mechanisms and operations step by step and master their use. I also sometimes study these things on my own as a hobby.

They prefer spending time alone and value the freedom to act independently. Basically, they don't want to interfere with others, nor do they want to be interfered with.

I enjoy spending time with close friends and family whom I truly trust. We can feel a sense of intimacy by sharing exciting experiences together.

I always strive to think and judge calmly. I rarely panic, feel intimidated, or get irritated. I approach things logically, avoiding emotional outbursts and hesitation, and making sure not to make mistakes in judgment. I know that even a slight lapse in concentration can ruin everything.

They always keep the current situation in mind and strive to overcome challenges. Those around them may worry that they are fearless. Although they may feel disappointed after repeated failures, they are able to quickly change their mindset. They readily give up on things that are not working, change their approach, stubbornly continue to challenge themselves, and try to seize opportunities.

I enjoy being in nature and looking at cityscapes. I have an adventurous spirit and would like to have exciting experiences, even if they involve a little danger.

They possess excellent observational skills and calm analytical abilities, and can quickly navigate dangerous situations with their agility. They enjoy fast-paced sports that require explosive power, such as skiing, skydiving, surfing, judo, and fencing.

I am interested in driving and maintaining cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles. I can naturally concentrate on the workings of my calm mind, feel the thrill of driving safely while avoiding danger, and enjoy the endlessly changing scenery. Also, if something is wrong, my intuition kicks in and I can notice it early.

Most of the time, we are engrossed in the present, but we don't miss the slightest signs, and occasionally we can sense what's happening behind the scenes. However, we should never get carried away and surrender ourselves to thrilling experiences. No matter how skilled you are, there is always a risk of being involved in an unavoidable accident. Also, when you're going fast, steering becomes more difficult than you might imagine, and you lose control of the forces acting on the vehicle.

They are basically a lone wolf type, preferring to be alone whether concentrating on work or going out. They may sometimes come across as distant. However, they do spend time with a small group of close friends. They enjoy spending time with seniors, colleagues, and juniors they truly trust and are friendly, treating everyone equally and generously.

I'm interested in things that are visible, change quickly, and other things that can be perceived through the five senses. I don't trust much else.

They develop an interest in machines and devices such as computers and cameras, and through trial and error, they operate them themselves to understand how they work. Sometimes they may even try to disassemble them. When something breaks down, they use their intuition to figure out what's wrong and consider whether they can fix it. This kind of thing requires concentration, and as a result they become familiar with handling these things and acquire specialized knowledge and skills.

They are capable of performing precise and meticulous tasks, and can concentrate on simple, painstaking work. Their proficiency in calculations also makes them well-suited for desk jobs such as accounting.

I would be happy to work in a job where I can utilize my skills and receive adequate compensation.

After finishing work for the day, I want to go home and relax. Sometimes I feel an impulsive urge to spread my wings, take a break, and enjoy fine food, drinks, and entertainment.

Also, sometimes you might take a nap without realizing it, without worrying about what others think.

Rather than thinking too far into the future, I prefer to focus on short-term tasks. I immerse myself in my daily work, and before I know it, I've completed a large volume of tasks, ready to take on the next opportunity.

Rather than blindly following authority or rules, I prioritize objective judgment on the ground. I dislike giving bureaucratic instructions based on established customs without seeing what's happening on the ground.

While authority and rules have value when things are going smoothly, emergencies and changing circumstances can occur at any time, and at those times, you must make your own decisions on the spot. This attitude is especially effective when a crisis is imminent and you cannot afford to be leisurely and consult with someone. Many of these individuals go on to become rescue workers, firefighters, or members of the Self-Defense Forces, and they fearlessly exercise the rights assigned to them in the field.

ISTPs don't always try to disregard the chain of command. In normal circumstances, they follow rules and authority. Nevertheless, they have their own opinions and, when necessary, can naturally respond with their own judgment and flexible strategies.

They don't try to handle everything their own way; they do care about other people's opinions and seek advice from trustworthy individuals. Praise boosts their confidence. On the other hand, even when bombarded with criticism, they rarely become emotional. Ultimately, they decide for themselves whether or not to accept advice from others.

They often possess high physical abilities and achieve great success in sports. In fact, many sports scholarship recipients fall into this category. Their career choices may include the military, pilots, construction equipment operators, firefighters, and paramedics. They also excel at manual labor, and therefore frequently become skilled craftsmen in manufacturing, machine assembly, installation, and maintenance.

Women can demonstrate their dexterity and heightened senses in household chores such as sewing and cooking. They can concentrate on these tasks and become proficient. Their love for their family motivates them, so they create things with consideration for others.

However, they tend to be slow to become aware of their femininity, so they may not bake sweets or cook meals for their boyfriends, nor may they proactively imagine themselves as brides and try to learn housework. Like men, they find sports and driving more enjoyable.

This type is also seen in businessmen and financial traders. Their strengths lie in their ability to focus and refine ideas that interest them, to carefully consider profit and loss, to make calm, realistic judgments, and to seize opportunities. They may hope to build sufficient wealth and retire early.

Sometimes, during periods of time spent without thinking about anything, the meaning and interpretation of one's experiences suddenly become clear. These may be general insights that transcend personal boundaries. Also, very rarely, one may have mystical experiences or see images. Even if one had previously only believed in what was visible, such experiences can make one feel that the existence of mysterious forces is undeniable.

I'm not very good at expressing myself verbally. When I do speak, I simply state the concrete facts as they are and in a concise manner.

Rather than being considerate of others or going along with what they say, I want to know the facts. Because of this, I sometimes unintentionally offend others.

Thoughts are expressed through actions. When anger arises and becomes uncontrollable, it may even lead to shouting or hitting. As you get older, you learn, and such behaviors will likely disappear.

If they feel it's dangerous or they can't take responsibility, they'll try to withdraw from the situation. Towards someone they like, they might use their skills to help or give them a gift.

In relationships between men and women, dressing stylishly and appealing to physical attractiveness as masculine or feminine might be key. For men, working out, doing physically demanding work, or focusing on sports can be attractive to women.

They rarely express themselves through words, instead showing their emotions through actions. If their intentions aren't understood, frustration can build up on both sides. In fact, because they constantly strive to maintain a calm, cool, and simple mindset, they struggle to build romantic or intimate relationships through sweet words. Instead, they prefer to build relationships by sharing meals, trips, drives, exciting experiences, and thrilling adventures. Other personality types need to be aware of this.

Learning through direct interaction using one's hands and body allows for efficient understanding while maintaining interest. I cannot understand overly abstract and complex theories, nor do I want to spend time on them. While I certainly acknowledge the value of such things, I am more interested in things that produce immediate, visible changes and are practical.

Nevertheless, they become proficient in arithmetic and elementary mathematics, performing basic arithmetic operations and manipulating mathematical formulas, showing interest in concepts that are easy to visualize, and seeking a consistent understanding of them.

I am drawn to the beauty of things expressed through simple structures, and I appreciate such art and visual arts. I have little interest in stories, essays, classical Japanese literature, classical Chinese literature, and history, and it's not uncommon for me to say that I don't understand why people study them.

Women, like men, are interested in fast-paced activities and thrilling, exciting experiences. And when they are young, they may sometimes resort to physical actions rather than words.

However, as they get older, they become more conscious of their femininity, so they start wearing makeup and dressing stylishly. However, their sense of style may be questioned. It's a good idea to occasionally ask for opinions from close friends or people they trust. Also, while they don't take overly masculine risks, they can enjoy things like going to stylish restaurants, traveling, and going to the theater. When they have money, they tend to spend it all.

Men, in particular, can be unfriendly or rude, and may unknowingly offend others or make awkward jokes.

Women, unless they are stressed, tend to be charming towards those close to them. However, they don't actively try to expand their social circle; they are rather passive in that regard.

Both men and women tend to take people's words at face value and are honest, but they can be insensitive when it comes to people. They may not realize the malice of others or the dangers they might fall into in relationships until much later.

Calm judgment and bold action are necessary for building something or overcoming obstacles. However, if this tendency is too strong, one may become overly focused on efficiency and profit, neglecting the impact on others, and thus face criticism from others.

Their careful understanding, diligent effort, and proactive approach are always in demand in the real world. They make our cities convenient and livable, and protect us from danger.
